Itinerary

Day 1: The Beginning of the Challenge and Humantay Lake

We will pick you up early from your hotel in Cusco. We will travel by bus to Mollepata and then to Soraypampa. After breakfast, we begin the uphill hike to Humantay Lake. Enjoy the stunning turquoise beauty of this glacial lagoon. We return to Soraypampa for lunch and set up camp. Tonight, you will rest under the Andean stars.

Day 2: Crossing the Salkantay Pass

The most demanding day begins very early. We hike along rocky trails toward the Salkantay Pass. We reach the highest altitude of the trek at 4,650 m.a.s.l. The views of the Salkantay Glacier are unmatched. We then begin a gradual descent toward the Chaullay campsite. Vegetation changes as we enter the cloud forest zone. Rest and recover after a long trekking day.

Day 3: High Jungle and Aguas Calientes

We continue descending into the high jungle. You will experience a dramatic change in climate and landscape. We walk through green valleys and coffee plantations. We arrive at La Playa or Santa Teresa for lunch. In the afternoon, we walk along the train tracks toward Aguas Calientes. Dinner in town and rest for the big day ahead.

Day 4: Machu Picchu and Return

Early in the morning, we go up to Machu Picchu by bus or on foot. Your guide will lead you through the shared guided tour of the citadel. You will explore the most important and iconic sites. You will also have time to enjoy the place on your own. Afterwards, you return to Aguas Calientes to take the train back. The bus will be waiting at the station to take you back to Cusco.

Yes, it is safe if you follow your guide. The trail is well-marked and frequently used. The guide provides clear safety instructions. You must walk at a slow and steady pace due to the altitude.

Your main luggage stays stored in Cusco. You will only carry a small backpack. Mules carry the camping equipment and food. You will retrieve your luggage upon returning to Cusco.

This is a demanding but non-technical hike. You need to be in good general physical condition. No climbing or rope experience is required. Prior walking training is recommended.

Both routes are incredible but different. Salkantay is more challenging and natural. It offers more varied landscapes with glaciers and jungle. The Inca Trail is more historical and famous.
